KLEIN & ASSOCIATES! Job Description Phlebotomy A minimum of twelve (12) continuous months of experience within the last three (3) years rendering direct patient care in public or private institution.
Duties/Responsibilities shall include, but not limited to the following:
Perform venipuncture and finger sticks using standard equipment to include needles; Communicate to patient/youth on the procedure to be done; Collect and distribute specimens from patient/youth for laboratory testing per testing requirements; Centrifuge, label and store blood samples for analysis by CCHCS Clinical Maintain inventory of supplies, stock supplies and hand trays; Follow Institution written standard procedures, or follow standard phlebotomy and/or laboratory personnel in obtaining blood from hard to draw patients and maintaining appropriate records of specimens drawn; Obtain blood specimens from patient/youth under a variety of conditions; Understand and follow written and oral instructions; Perform test order recording into electronic system per procedure Handle and properly label bio hazardous specimens; Maintain a clean, neat and safe work environment; and Work under stress, critical, unusual or dangerous situations where speed and attention to detail are important aspects of the tasks.
Phlebotomists shall have knowledge of:
Pre-analytical testing phase of Clinical Laboratory operations.
Medical terminology.
Principles and practices of proper venipuncture techniques.
Correct color-coded tubes for laboratory testing per testing requirements Proper processing of blood samples and other clinical specimens for laboratory testing.
Safe handling of blood and blood products for laboratory testing.
Transmission of infection and methods for prevention.
The major constituents of whole blood, serum, and plasma.
The basic expectations of normal blood clotting and when post-phlebotomy bleeding may be excessive.
Signs and symptoms of physical problems that may occur during blood collection; and Protocols to prevent sample cross-contamination.
